WoodShopAgent: What It Is, What It Does, and Why Canadian Woodworkers Should Care

If you've been following along, you saw the early mention of WoodShopAgent a few months back — a short post, not much detail, more of a flag in the ground. We were intentionally quiet about it because the platform wasn't ready to explain properly.

It is now.

WoodShopAgent is live, it's in beta, and Canadian woodworkers are actively using it. This article is the full explanation we owe you: what the platform actually is, what it does, how the business model works, and why we built it for people like us rather than for the industry analysts and government agencies who will eventually benefit from what we're building.

The Problem It's Solving

Ask any furniture maker, cabinet builder, or millwork shop how they price a job, and you'll get a range of answers. Some have a system. Most are working from experience and gut feel. A significant number are undercharging — not because they don't value their work, but because the inputs they need to quote accurately are scattered, inconsistent, and hard to access.

Lumber prices are the most obvious example. A board foot of hard maple in British Columbia costs something different than it does in Ontario, and something different again in Saskatchewan. Those regional differences are real and they move. Quoting from memory, or from a price list that's six months old, introduces error at the foundation of every estimate.

Time is the other variable that most makers undercalculate. How long a project takes depends on the species you're working, the joinery you're using, the complexity of the design, and — critically — your specific shop setup. A one-person shop with hand tools takes longer than a two-person shop with a CNC. Both estimates are legitimate. Neither is the same.

Then there's the funding side. Canada has programs supporting small manufacturers, craft businesses, and rural producers that most makers have never heard of. The information exists, but finding what applies to your situation takes time most shop owners don't have.

WoodShopAgent is built around all three of these gaps.

What WoodShopAgent Actually Is

WoodShopAgent is a free-to-use project intelligence platform for Canadian furniture and related product manufacturers — from one-person artisan shops to mid-sized manufacturing operations.

It is not an accounting tool. It is not a project management app. It is not a CRM.

It is a decision-support platform that helps woodworking makers estimate more accurately, quote with more confidence, and access information that is relevant to their business and their province.

It runs at woodshopagent.ca. Creating an account is free. Using the platform is free. That's covered in more detail below.

What the Platform Does

Project Cost Estimates Calibrated to Your Province

When you build a project estimate in WoodShopAgent, the lumber cost inputs are calibrated to Canadian provincial markets — not national averages, not US data converted to CAD. The platform factors in where you are, because where you are changes the numbers in ways that matter.

This is one of the core things that makes the tool different from using a generic estimating spreadsheet. A quote built in Saskatchewan on Saskatchewan lumber prices is a more honest quote than one built on a national average that doesn't reflect what you paid at the yard last week.

Time Estimates Calibrated to Your Shop

Project time estimates account for your shop setup and experience level. A beginner with basic tools gets different time estimates than an experienced maker with a fully equipped shop — because they should. The goal is accuracy, not flattery.

This also means the estimates improve over time as more makers use the platform and log outcomes. The more real project data the system has from Canadian shops of different sizes and setups, the more refined the time estimates become.

Client Quote Generation

Once you've built an estimate, WoodShopAgent generates a client-facing quote you can use directly. It's structured, professional, and built from your numbers — not a template you have to manually populate every time.

For makers who are currently sending estimates in email or building them in a spreadsheet from scratch, this alone reduces the friction of the quoting process significantly.

Canadian Funding Program Information

The platform surfaces information on Canadian funding programs relevant to small furniture and woodworking manufacturers — grants, loans, and support programs that many makers qualify for but never apply to because they didn't know they existed.

This is curated for the sector. It is not a generic government grants database.

Project Outcome Logging

When a project is complete, you can log the actual outcome against the original estimate — what the project actually cost in materials, and how long it actually took. The platform tracks the variance and feeds it back into future estimate accuracy.

This is how estimating gets better over time. Most makers carry this information in their head or lose it entirely. Logging it takes minutes and compounds into something useful.

Voluntary Local Lumber Price Reporting

Makers can voluntarily report local lumber prices from their region. This is the community side of the platform — the more makers contribute what they're actually paying at the yard, the more current and regionally accurate the cost estimates become for everyone.

This is voluntary, transparent, and directly benefits every maker who uses the platform.

Why It's Free — The Honest Explanation

WoodShopAgent is free to use for makers. No subscription, no tiered pricing, no freemium bait-and-switch. We want to be direct about how that works, because you deserve to understand the model.

The consideration for free access is your data.

When you use the platform — logging projects, reporting lumber prices, generating estimates — you are contributing to an aggregated dataset on Canadian woodworking production: material costs by region and species, production hours by shop type and complexity, project demand patterns, and more. That aggregated, anonymized dataset has significant value to Canadian governmental bodies, research institutions, and industry stakeholders who need accurate, current sector intelligence.

WoodShopAgent will sell that sector intelligence in the form of structured reports to those buyers. That is the revenue model.

What you are not doing, as a maker: having your individual business data sold or identified. The reports are aggregate and derived. Your shop's numbers are not the product — the patterns across thousands of Canadian shops are.

We say this plainly because it's the honest version of what "free" means here. You are contributing to something. You are getting a genuinely useful tool in return. The people who eventually pay for the output of that data are governments and institutions, not other businesses competing with you.

Who It's For

WoodShopAgent is built for the full range of Canadian woodworking makers:

Artisan and small shop operators — one to three people, producing custom and small-batch furniture, cabinetry, millwork, or related products. This is the user profile that benefits most immediately from better quoting and time estimation tools.

Mid-sized manufacturing operations — shops with more output, more complexity, and more to gain from accurate project data, funding program access, and production intelligence.

The platform is not limited to handcrafted one-off furniture. If you're producing solid wood products in Canada at any scale — custom dining tables, cabinet runs, architectural millwork, production seating — WoodShopAgent is built with your operation in mind.

Where We Are Right Now

WoodShopAgent is in active beta. There are currently accounts from across the country, and the platform is collecting real project data from real Canadian makers.

We are not pretending the platform is finished. Beta means we are building with early users, and the tool will improve as more makers engage with it. The core functionality is live and useful now. The refinements that come from a larger, more active user base will make it more useful over time.

This is the phase where your involvement matters most. A platform like this gets better with volume — more regional price data, more logged project outcomes, more shop types represented in the dataset. If you join during beta, you are directly shaping what this becomes.

What We're Asking

Create an account at woodshopagent.ca. Build one estimate on a project you're currently pricing or have priced recently. See whether the output reflects your reality.

WoodShopAgent Sign Up Callout

If it does, log the outcome when the project is done.

If it doesn't — if the lumber estimates are off for your region, or the time estimates don't match your shop, or something is missing that would make it useful — tell us. Beta means we're listening.

The platform is most useful when it reflects what Canadian makers actually experience. The only way to get there is through makers who are willing to use it and give us real feedback.

The Bigger Picture

Canada has a significant handcrafted and manufactured wood furniture sector. It is largely invisible in national data, underrepresented in policy discussions, and poorly served by the tools that exist.

Canada Map 3D — Radial Gradient Background

WoodShopAgent is being built to change that — not by speaking for makers, but by creating the infrastructure for makers to speak through their own data, aggregated at a scale that gives it weight.

The immediate value is in your shop, on your next quote. The longer-term value is in what a platform with thousands of Canadian makers using it can tell the people who set policy, fund programs, and make purchasing decisions about this sector.

Both of those matter. The first one is why you should try it. The second one is why it's worth building.

WoodShopAgent is in open beta at woodshopagent.ca. Free to join. Built for Canadian woodworkers, from one-person shops to full manufacturing operations.

I have signed up and used this platform for months now, and the company that developed this is a growing shop in Saskatoon, SK, which I have visited last year. They come from generational woodworkers and their nephew has been working hard with keeping that knowledge alive.
It looks like they are onto something with this one, and it really seems to have been worked in details. I do not think a woodworking shop (or individual) has anything that needs that is not offered on this app, except for woodcarving and turning (which I know that are working to develop later on).
I would absolutely recommend Canadian shops to try this app and use it as much as possible.
